TOOT Chalec

We've been told Google Play transparently shows what data is collected etc, right? And whether an app has Ads? Well, dream on. I've just checked an app to see if it would fit my repo. Below is what Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.isaakhanimann.journal) says about it (no "Ads" marker), then the results from my library scanner.

Careful what you believe and whom you trust.

"Data Safety" section of the app on Google Play, saying "No data shared with third parties. No data collected" For the very same app: Results by my library scanner, showing the app contains libraries of 2 Analytics frameworks (Crashlytics, Firebase Analytics) plus Google Ads. This must mean that Google is no "third party" and doesn't collect any data. And the pope is muslim I guess, or so.

In my experience, Jami works well for communication between GNU/Linux computers. With Android, it is indeed less reliable, with fruit company phones, it is nearly unusable. I use XMPP regularly with 3 family members who have Android or fruit company phones, I started with a domain I registered using services from conversations.im but now #Freedombox can fill all my needs.

I forgot one perhaps key point: I use a stable distro, so packages have been tested for a while, apps should not break and maintainers just care about security updates. If one uses a rolling release distro, things may break at any time anyway.

Based on advice from upstream developpers, I once had the foolish idea to use flatpak in order to have a newer version of the app. At some point, it stopped working but it was only on my distro so they said "not our problem". Then I wanted to move back to my distro's version and it would not recognize anything stored by the new version, so I had to start from zero. I will not forget that lesson soon.

I guess flatpak has technical benefits (and drawbacks) and I am pretty ignorant about that, but this is not the issue here.

My experience is that when an app from flatpak does not work anymore on your distro, neither distro maintainers nor flatpak mainteners consider it in their scope to try fixing that. If the app is also provided by the distro, one option is to switch to it, but if it is an LTS distro, it will be an older version and you may not be able to reuse any stored data made with the flatpak version. So my advice would be: don't use flatpak for any app where losing all your data would be a problem.

Can anyone explain to me why companies use Windows and shit like that even with all the spyware they have been proved to have?

There's something here I don't get.

The FSF recently awarded its Respects Your Freedom (RYF) certification to the Free Software Gigabit Mini VPN Router (TPE-R1400) from ThinkPenguin, Inc. Read the full announcement and check out the device: https://u.fsf.org/3z7 Congrats,
